Awareness about critical safety issues during the summer months can make the difference between having a wonderful vacation to remember and having a vacation that turns into a nightmare. Use the following tips to have a healthy, happy summer:

1. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outdoors regardless of whether it’s sunny or cloudy.
2. Stay out of direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun’s rays are the strongest.
3. If using a bug repellent, read the label to make sure it contains less than 10% DEET, a broad-spectrum insect repellent.
4. Apply repellent to clothing instead of skin to minimize DEET absorption.
5. Learn CPR.
6. Never swim alone.
7. Never leave children alone near the water.
8. Never drink alcohol while swimming or boating.
9. Check your first aid kit and make sure missing, used or expired items have been replaced.
10. Drink plenty of water!
