Summertime is a great time to get outdoors with your kids. Covenant Health fitness expert Missy Kane offers these tips to make the most of the warm weather months while children are out of school.

  1. Take supper outside - Statistics say that children who eat in front of the TV or computer pack on more pounds than kids who don't. Summer is a great time to get them far away from these distractions. Pack a picnic and eat outdoors.
  2. Plan some after dinner entertainment - Leave the dirty dishes behind and take the kids outside for some fun after meals. Riding bikes, playing catch, and catching fireflies are all great ways to get active.
  3. Park yourself at the park - If your family entertainment usually revolves around a video store and a box of popcorn, change it up for summertime. Our many local parks offer bike trails, playgrounds, and sports fields just waiting for families who want to have fun.
  4. Drink up - When children become lethargic or edgy, they may be suffering the effects of dehydration. Instead of giving up and heading indoors, try giving them a drink of water and ask them to stay and play for "a little while longer."
  5. Be prepared - Carry a small first aid kit to treat bug bites and boo-boos immediately so you can keep having fun.
